As the original PlayStation shuffles slowly off this mortal coil, there are still huge sales to be made due to its massive user base. 989 Sports, as a Sony subsidiary, is well aware of this, and has brought the only new baseball title available for the PS One to market - MLB 2003.
When you've been spoiled by next-generation console's graphics, it's easy to overlook what is important - and that's the core gameplay. MLB 2003 does a good job of providing most of the features you'd expect from a baseball game, and while the graphics are somewhat blocky, MLB 2003 plays a mean game of arcade baseball.
The Total Control interface still applies here, with pitching, batting and fielding. When fielding, each base is mapped to a corresponding button (Triangle for second, Square for third, etc.) and quickly becomes second nature. Want to dive, or throw from you knees? You can do that. MLB 2003 allows you to adjust your stance, hit for power or accuracy, and move the batter around in the box until everything is set just so.
